Beware of this phone scam

It all starts with a phone call from “Google”, you pick up and a recording starts playing, the script reads:

Hello and please don’t hang up. We’ve tried to contact you numerous times to verify your business with Google. Our record show your business has not been verified by Google. Please press one now so we can verify your business with Google. If you are the business owner. Please press one now. If your account has not been verified to customer searching for your services will not find your listing press one now to verify your listing or press nine to be removed from this list.

Google does not call businesses directly to verify their listing, the practice of calling business owners uses a tactic that promises much but delivers nothing. The system transfers the target person to a live operator who is more than happy to get the credit card details and receive payment for “services”, once they have your information they will charge your credit card or use it to unauthorized purchases. It is important to understand that no service can guarantee good ranking results on any search engine.

Unfortunately, we have heard reports of people falling for this scam and some have lost time and money dealing with it. If you are one of the thousands of people who receive this call daily, simply hang up and if at all possible block the caller.

What to do if you get an automated call?

First thing to do is hang up immediately, then you can file a complain with the Federal Trade Commission. If you wish to add your phone number to the DO NOT CALL list click here.

You will get an e-mail confirmation that reads:

Thank you for registering your phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry. You successfully registered your phone number ending in XXXX on May 8, 2018. Most telemarketers will be required to stop calling you 31 days from your registration date.
